True or false? Smartphone myths debunked

True or false? Smartphone myths debunked

Published: Aug 29, 2021

How well do you know your tech? Let’s look at three popular beliefs about our devices and find out whether they’re fact or fiction.

Myth #1 Dry a wet phone in rice

The Myth: Dropped your phone in water? Dry it by leaving it in a bag of rice.

The Truth: Drying your phone in rice is less effective than simply leaving it out to dry. The starch in rice might even get into your device and cause more damage.

Myth #2 Charging your phone overnight

The Myth: Charging your phone overnight will cause damage to its battery.

The Truth: Your smartphone is pretty smart—it knows when the battery is fully charged and will stop charging. But keeping your phone at 100% all the time may cause faster battery degradation, so try to keep it at a maximum of 80%.

Myth #3 More megapixels

The Myth: The more megapixels your camera boasts, the better your image quality.

The Truth: The higher the megapixel count, the more details your camera can capture—great for the large screen or print. They're not the only factor, though. Sensor size, which determines how much light your lens can take in, is as important and can make or break your photo in low light conditions—regardless of megapixel count.
