6 tips for worry-free, safer internet browsing
Published: Aug 29, 2021If you're online, you're probably being tracked. Here are some ways we can better protect ourselves and our data on the internet.
#1 Be wary of public Wi-Fi
Free public Wi-Fi is less secure than personal Wi-Fi, so use mobile data if possible. If you must, use a secure Wi-Fi connection.
#2 Update your browser
Keeping your browser updated will ensure you get the latest security features. Do update your browser plug-ins and extensions as well.
#3 Use pop-up blocker
Pop-ups are a nuisance and at times a security concern (e.g. redirecting you to an unsafe site). Turn on pop-up blocking in your browser's security settings.
#4 Clear your cookies
Cookies track and save sites you've visited. They're useful but also pose a security threat. Clear them regularly in your browser's history settings.
#5 Browse privately
In private or incognito mode, your history and cookies will not be saved. You may still be tracked by your employer or internet provider.
#6 Be wary of links
Malicious links can deliver malware or other security threats to your device. Hover on links to see where they lead, and never click on links from strange emails.
